Body Surface Area (BSA)

Calculate body surface area using the Mosteller and DuBois formulas. Used clinically for chemotherapy dosing, burn assessment, and cardiac output calculations.

Mosteller
1.82 m²
DuBois
1.81 m²
Haycock
1.83 m²
Educational tool. Not a substitute for clinical judgment, professional diagnosis, or treatment. Always verify with current guidelines.

How to use the body surface area (bsa)

Pick units, enter height and weight. Three common BSA formulas compute side-by-side. Mosteller is the most widely used clinically.

Formula & explanation

Mosteller: BSA (m²) = √((height_cm × weight_kg) ÷ 3600). DuBois: 0.007184 × ht^0.725 × wt^0.425. Haycock: 0.024265 × ht^0.3964 × wt^0.5378.

Examples

170 cm, 70 kg → Mosteller ≈ 1.81 m², DuBois ≈ 1.81 m².

Frequently asked questions

Which formula should I use?
Mosteller is favored for chemotherapy dosing per most guidelines. DuBois is older but widely accepted.
Children?
Haycock is generally preferred under age 5; otherwise Mosteller is fine.
