How to use the sales tax calculator
Pick a country preset, or enter your own rate. Choose 'add' if your input is pre-tax, or 'remove' to back out the pre-tax amount from a tax-inclusive total.
Formula & explanation
Add: tax = price × rate; total = price + tax. Remove: pretax = price ÷ (1 + rate); tax = price − pretax.
Examples
100 + 8.25% sales tax (US) = 108.25. UK VAT 20%: 100 → 120. Removing 20% VAT from 120 → 100 + 20 tax.
Frequently asked questions
- What's the difference between Sales Tax, VAT, GST, HST?
- They're all consumption taxes. Sales Tax (US) is added at point-of-sale. VAT (most of Europe) is paid at every step of the supply chain but only the end consumer bears the net cost. GST (Canada/Australia/India/NZ) is similar to VAT. HST (Canada) is GST + provincial sales tax combined.
- Are these rates current?
- Snapshots — verify against your country's tax authority before relying on them. Local sub-jurisdictions (US states, Canadian provinces, Indian states) often add their own rates.
