Inductance Calculator

Calculate inductive reactance (XL) and energy stored in an inductor from inductance and frequency. Also computes resonant frequency for LC circuits.

Reactance X_L
3.7699 Ω
Energy
5.0000 mJ

How to use the inductance calculator

Enter inductance (mH), frequency (Hz), and current (A).

Formula & explanation

Inductive reactance: X_L = 2πfL. Energy stored: E = ½LI².

Examples

10 mH at 60 Hz → X_L ≈ 3.77 Ω. 1 A → 5 mJ.

Frequently asked questions

What is inductive reactance?
Inductive reactance (X_L) is the opposition an inductor presents to AC current. It increases with both frequency and inductance: X_L = 2πfL.
Why does an inductor block high frequencies more than low ones?
Reactance is proportional to frequency, so a higher-frequency signal sees a higher impedance from the same inductor — this is the basis of low-pass filter design.
Where is the energy stored in an inductor?
Energy is stored in the inductor's magnetic field. The amount is E = ½LI², so doubling the current quadruples the stored energy.
